Why is this important?
Even the most successful individuals have character traits or behaviours that negatively impact on their performance, or aversely affect those around them. They may not be aware of how their behaviour impacts on colleagues or clients.
Common negative traits in management include:
-
failing to control emotions and projecting these on to others
-
constant criticism of others that creates a demotivated workforce
-
aggression that is interpreted as intimidation or bullying
-
unpredictability causing loss of initiative and fear
-
abuse of alcohol or drugs inside or outside the workplace
-
perfectionism and/or controlling nature that stifles the development of others
-
limiting self beliefs undermining performance
The behaviours are usually the surface presentation of underlying psychological issues. These may have roots in past events which need to be resolved or redefined. Inappropriate behaviours can lead to a de-motivated, disillusioned workforce that is underperforming and can adversely affect the culture of your business as well as having a negative impact on your reputation, performance and profit.
How O" can help you
O" have developed a broad range of 1-2-1 coaching interventions to deal with almost all behavioral problems in the workplace. We can also help resolve the underlying psychological issues, limiting self beliefs or past events that are driving the negative behaviours. Each programme will be designed specifically for the individual concerned but will be based around the following process model:
-
increasing self awareness of the damaging or limiting behaviours
where necessary, confronting the behaviours
-
giving constructive feedback to the candidate
-
developing
emotional intelligence
-
exploring alternative appropriate behaviours
-
consciously practicing the new skills or behaviours
-
integrating the new behaviours
-
reviewing progress and monitoring change
The benefits to you
An executive or manager displaying inappropriate or negative behaviours will have a damaging impact on your business. Such behaviours will inevitably have a negative influence on employees' performance and productivity. Inappropriate behaviours may also damage your companies' reputation with your customers and other external stakeholders. Denying the existence of such problems is not an option if you wish to grow your business. Dealing with them through a cost effective, short programme of focused 1-2-1 coaching will ensure best use of your 'human capital', improve performance and productivity and safeguard your reputation.
Have you confronted and resolved all of the behavioural problems in your business?
Do you know of someone in your organisation who displays unacceptable behaviours or attitudes?
If you have answered "no" to any of the above questions, contact Robin Johnson or Philip Perry at O" Consulting on 0845 260 7700 or email info@o-consulting.com

Developing management and leadership style An alternative to being an autocratic or democratic manager is to be a situational manager. Situational managers/leaders are able to adapt their style to fit their employees' stages of development and the different scenarios they work with. This means, for example, that a manager may respond very differently to the people in his team, choosing a range of interventions from directive to supportive. This flexibility of style will inevitably help that manager be more effective in the workplace.

| Improving interpersonal skills How often have you come across someone who is technically brilliant, or highly competent professionally, but just can't connect in their relationships with others? This negative trait puts them at a disadvantage at those times when they need to build rapport, get on the same wavelength as others and develop trust. Poor interpersonal skills are often cited by employees as the biggest de-motivator when giving feedback about their managers and team leaders.
