Promoting strategic thinking

Why is this important?

Entrepreneurs and business leaders are so often preoccupied working in their businesses that they forget to work on their businesses. That's why a business review, or the preparation of a strategic plan, is a necessity. Writing a plan is no guarantee of success, but without one the organisation is more likely to fail. One common flaw is failing to proceed to the full implementation stage of the plan. There's clearly no point investing executive and management time in preparing a plan if it is destined to gather dust on a manager's shelf!

Communicating your vision and strategic plan throughout your organisation and getting 'buy-in' from your employees is essential to your success. A key component in this process is developing the capacity in your managers and other key employees to think strategically. This will help ensure that your vision and plan are clearly communicated and understood at all levels in your business. Without the capacity to 'think strategically' in your managers and key employees, you will probably fail to deliver on your objectives - there will be no alignment between how you use your resources and what you want to achieve. Put directly, if everyone in your business doesn't know what you are trying to achieve and doesn't understand what they should be doing to get there, you will fail in your objectives.

How O" can help you

A strategic plan is often confused with a business plan. Strategic plans should be short and direct whereas business plans are typically more substantial and detailed. A strategic plan can provide the basis for a business plan. It should be realistic and achievable so as to encourage the organisation's managers and entrepreneurs to think strategically and act operationally.

O" are NOT a general management consultancy; O" develop and motivate key people to excel. We will develop the appropriate skills in your key people to be able to:

  • clarify your current market position, strengths and weaknesses
  • identify your competition, opportunities and threats
  • determine the future direction and goals for your organisation
  • map out your company values and value related behaviours
  • communicate your plan to your employees
  • build capacity in your key employees to think strategically

The benefits to you

Promoting strategic planning and thinking throughout your business will help you maintain competitive advantage and will facilitate implementation of your corporate plan. Communicating your vision and goals and getting 'buy-in' throughout your organisation is essential if you are to achieve your aims and realise the profit you have set. Your aim should be to have a clear corporate plan and have every employee aligned to delivering it.

Does every employee know and understand your corporate objectives for this year and next?

Do all of your managers and key employees think strategically?

Have you developed a clear vision for the future of your organisation and communicated this to all of your employees?

Have they all bought-in to your plan?

If you have answered "no" to any of the above questions, contact Robin Johnson or Philip Perry at O" Consulting on 0845 260 7700
