Improving interpersonal skills

Why is this important?

No man or woman is an island. We all live and work in relationship with others. The ability to build, maintain and flourish our relationships with others is essential if we are to succeed and fulfil our potential in our personal and professional life.

How often have you come across someone who is technically brilliant, or highly competent professionally, but just can't connect in their relationships with others? This negative trait puts them at a disadvantage at those times when they need to build rapport, get on the same wavelength as others and develop trust. Poor interpersonal skills are often cited by employees as the biggest de-motivator when giving feedback about their managers and team leaders.

Consider for a moment some of the times when our interpersonal skills are critical:

  • communicating our ideas and plans
  • making captivating presentations
  • selling products or services
  • interviewing or carrying out staff appraisals
  • giving honest feedback when there is a risk of causing offence
  • influencing others in meetings
  • getting buy-in for our ideas
  • negotiating and moving forward to close the deal
  • talking and listening to customers
  • building new relationships or developing existing ones

How O" can help you

O" have designed a range of short coaching programmes aimed at:

  • increasing self awareness
  • improving communication skills
  • developing emotional intelligence
  • improving rapport building skills
  • improving active listening
  • understanding and acting assertively
  • learning how to give and receive constructive feedback
  • building high performance teams
  • developing creativity and thinking
  • delivering high impact presentations

Each programme is designed to specifically meet the need of the individual you wish to develop and can be aligned with their Individual Learning or Development Plan. We are also able to offer an assessment service for your key employees through such processes as psychological profiling, undertaking 180Ö or 360Ö feedback or other stakeholder interviews so that you can identify areas for developing emerging leaders.

The benefits to you

On the successful conclusion of a coaching programme to develop interpersonal skills your employees will have increased their abilities in some, or all, of the following areas. They will:

  • understand the significance of building rapport
  • communicate more effectively with colleagues and customers
  • have more options for communicating interpersonally
  • understand how their behaviour affects other people
  • have greater flexibility for handling different situations
  • use body language better to emphasise their message
  • give and receive constructive feedback in a non-defensive way
  • actively listen at an altogether new level
  • be more confident in themselves
  • be able to use appropriate levels of assertiveness
  • have developed skills to resolve conflict

Developing the interpersonal skills of your key employees will create more harmonious relationships with internal and external stakeholders. This improvement leads to better productivity and greater motivation of your workforce and more opportunities to grow your business. Projects are more likely to be completed on time and to budget; the potential for conflict is reduced and conflict is resolved more quickly if it does occur. Better interpersonal skills help create a positive culture of continuous learning, growth, responsibility and accountability. These factors will inevitably produce performance improvement efficiencies and more profit for you.

Can you say with certainty that you have never lost any business or received a customer complaint because of the poor interpersonal skills of an employee?

Have you specifically developed the interpersonal skills of your key employees?
